11. Statement of Intent Draft

 STATEMENT OF INTENT DRAFT

How do you intend to use the four areas of the media theoretical framework to communicate meaning and meet the requirements of your chosen brief? (approx. 400 words)

Write about the concept for your video.

The concept for my video is based on the ideas of sexuality and relationships and how easy it is for people to miscommunicate and worry about themselves. This video will be about someone falling in love with another person, and they will reciprocate that love until the parentheses occur and they are left alone. There will be a parallel narrative throughout my video, almost in a circular structure where it begins with a person alone, leading to the romance and vulnerability, to the climax of the introduction of a third party person who interrupts this intimacy, and back to being alone, right where they started.

Write about how this concept will fit into the genre.

This concept will fit into the genre of an anthem through the track I have chosen which is I Bet on Losing Dogs by Mitski. Anthemic songs tend to be based on community and the relationships within those communities and how people are brought together through music. This song fits with my concept as it is essentially based on a metaphor for getting into relationships that are ill-fated from the beginning. This is shown through her use of lyrics which are very effective in creating that metaphor that she is conveying, as it is personal to her which could arguably make the song more meaningful.

Write about how this concept will attract a specific audience.

The concept of my music video will attract the specific middle-market aspirational audience of 16-25 as it is about the teenage years and the romance which is prevalent in these years. This will attract my target audience as it can be seen as reminiscent or currently relatable in someone's life. This Video will also include different representations, therefore will represent people of different genders and sexualities, meaning it will be more relatable for the audience as they will be able to relate to the people included in the video through the lens of someone struggling with aspects of themselves.

Write about how you will use mise-en-scene and what representations this mise-en-scene will produce.

I will use costume and makeup to portray the state of the characters and the emotions they are feeling. I will also be focusing on the setting and how that will reflect the characters’ state of mind and the prevalent events currently happening in their lives. The representations this use of mise-en-scene will produce are the societal expectations of conforming to straight and binary relationships.

Write about how these representations will attract your audience.

These representations will attract my audience due to the stereotypical teenage mind and how it is very typical amongst today's youth.

Write about how you will use editing and other appropriate conventions of a music video.

I will use a range of camera shots and angles, ranging from extreme close-up shots, long-distance shots and high-angled shots to show the differentiation between scenes and different shots will represent the ever-changing state of my characters.

Write about how you are going to use performance in the video.

I am going to use performance in my video through lip-syncing and dance. One person, the person who has been lead on and broken, will be walking along (maybe a beach setting) towards the camera whilst the operator is moving backwards, and they will be lip-syncing to the lyrics of the song, and creating that targeted sense of convincing performance. Alongside this lip-syncing, they will also be dancing (practically just movement, not detailed choreography) to reach that aim of chaos in that person's mind.

Write about any other aspects of the video not already covered.

Some shots I am planning to create are high-angle shots, looking down on people lying in a bed, splitting those shots with the main character of my video lying in the same position alone, cutting to the next one where they have the other person next to them. The lighting will be different in these shots, one having a late at night sense, the other in the daytime.
