3. Record Company

 SONY MUSIC

Sony Music is a record company that signs promising and emerging artists to release and sell their music to build their company and benefit others.

ARTISTS FORWARD

Artists Forward is a "new global initiative" that Sony Music has established to maximise and prioritise the assistance of their signed artists and music creators in "all aspects of their development". Within this creative enterprise, they have added many programmes for creators and artists to have that encouragement they need to thrive in the music industry.

THE PROGRAMMES:

1. Artist Assistance

"A broad global effort aimed at promoting wellness for our signed talent and providing them with relevant information and key resources for their careers." This targets inexperienced artists who are perhaps emerging into the industry and need a 'helping hand' as such. This could be argued as a unique selling point for Sony Music as it proves that they care and will support their artists and creators and aid them in going in the right direction for them to succeed.

2. Legally Unrecouped Balance Programme

"An initiative paying through qualifying earnings to many of our long-standing artists and participants globally, without regard to their recoupment status." This programme is for their artists who have been signed to them before the year 2000 "who have not received an advance from the year 2000 forward."

3. Real-Time Artist Tools

"A suite of offerings for our artists and participants around the world providing industry-leading earnings, payment and insights capabilities that enable greater financial flexibility and fast, informed creative decision making." This targets the artists and contributors for a more flexible career and to cleverly indulge in their creative aspects.

 4. Positive Influence Programme

"Positive Influence is our mentoring scheme, which connects talented young people from diverse backgrounds looking to break into the creative industry with Sony Music mentors. Our mentors have an understanding of the challenges faced and are trained to provide support to our mentees, helping them to build their confidence, connections and skillsets." In February of 2019, Sony Music began a collaboration with a charity and London called Creative Mentor Network which lead to the launch of the Positive Influence Programme. This mentoring programme is a 16-week course in which they received "expert coaching and specialist training". CMN's 'mission' is to "make the creative world of work more inclusive through mentoring." They cooperated with schools and colleges all across regions of London where they reached young people aged 16-24 with promising talent from diverse backgrounds, to "help them make connections, receive support and pick up new and invaluable skills." This reimplements the idea of Sony Music being a helpful and supportive record company for artists to succeed with. "The Positive Influence programme was launched in order to tackle inequality in the music industry and advocate better access and inclusion for under-represented communities. Research from The Gatsby Charitable Foundation found that young people are five times more likely to become employed if they make at least four professional connections before they leave school. Not all young people have access to the networks they need to build those connections and CMN and Sony Music are hoping to change this and create a more inclusive culture." https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8gDBYfk6faY

SOCIAL JUSTICE FUND

Sony Music's Social Justice Fund was created in late spring 2020. The aim was to"support social justice, equal rights and anti-racist initiatives around the world, and is part of the global Sony Music Group commitment to support communities and help address structural inequality for lasting change. Through the Social Justice Fund we aim to help provide and broaden opportunities for individuals in under-served communities and to improve education, skills and life chances. The fund serves to impact hard-to-reach young people, future music industry executives and artists who might otherwise struggle to break through." Sony Music's intention is to support employees, artists and creators to become encompassed in volunteering to share their skills and to mentor and lead workshops to give as much guidance as possible as an introduction to the music industry.

1. 3T Course

"Providing Black women with knowledge and skills to join the live industry, Nao’s 3T course launched in July 2020 as a proactive response to the music industry’s #BlackoutTuesday and in support of the Black Lives Matter movement."

2. Bruce Grove Youth Space

"Bruce Grove Youth Space in Tottenham is for young people aged 11-19 (up to 25 where there is a specific additional need or disability). They offer a wide range of informal learning opportunities to enable young people to feel safe, to develop as individuals, and to participate as valued members of the community. Key programmes and activities to promote wellbeing and empowerment are delivered alongside partnerships to promote values and skills for young people. Our support is funding new equipment and supporting the existing music programme. Sony Music signed artist Headie One, who grew up in Tottenham, said, “The Bruce Grove Youth Space is a great project, I’m glad to see Sony Music support it. Music helped me from a young age so I think it’s really important to help the next generation discover the joy and escape that music can provide.”"

3. Key4Life

Key4Life is a crime prevention charity that works with young men in prison, those at risk of going to prison and those caught up in knife crime. Key4Life’s mission is to break the cycle of reoffending amongst young men aged 18-30 who have the highest reoffending rates and lowest chances of securing employment. The funding from Sony Music is funding the charity’s ‘At Risk’ rehabilitation programme, which supports young ex-offenders to build resilience, unlock negative behaviours and fast track their employment, through a powerful blend of music, equine therapy and mentorship.

4. Milk & Honey Bees

"Milk & Honey is a creative and expressive safe space for Black girls to flourish. The charity runs nurturing and holistic programmes for young Black women and girls. The funding from Sony Music UK is supporting the development of the Creative Connection project for 16-25 year olds, providing skills, mentoring and a broad curriculum to help Black women access employment opportunities in the creative industries."

5. The Royal Academy of Music

"The Royal Academy of Music moves music forward by inspiring successive generations of musicians to connect, collaborate and create. It is the meeting point between the traditions of the past and the talent of the future, seeking out and supporting the musicians today whose music will move the world tomorrow. The funding from Sony Music is launching two new, four-year scholarships for students starting in September 2022, alongside mentorship on the programme – and for applicants – from alumnus Alexis Ffrench."

6. Young Urban Arts Foundation

"YUAF has worked with more than 17,500 young people since 2009 to create a world where marginalised young people are seen, heard and celebrated, no matter their background or circumstances. They use creativity and culture to empower young Londoners aged 13- 19, to raise their aspirations, build strong relationships and take a lead in shaping their futures. Sony Music has worked with YUAF since 2019 on projects including ‘Educate to Create’ – a programme to inspire and build the skills of disadvantaged London teenagers during the summer holidays. The recent funding from the Social Justice Fund supports the extension of workshops and masterclasses alongside the Black curriculum programme developed and hosted with Doctored Sound."

7. Pirate Studios

"The Sony Music Social Justice Fund enables Pirate to build upon The National Youth Studio Fund, an existing partnership between National Lottery Community Fund, Small Green Shoots and Pirate Studios. With numbers of youth centres falling across England, there is an opportunity to use studio space as a means to engage and build relationships with diverse, hard-to-reach young people. This fund provides opportunities to help develop skills, improve education, and offer career opportunities in safe and welcoming studio environments. The funding will be a pilot and will run for six months in three regions (London, South West and North West), to prove the effectiveness of music with youth engagement and form the basis for a much larger national program."

8. Small Green Shoots

"Small Green Shoots is a youth-led organisation that provides access to opportunities in music and the music industry for young people from diverse and low-income backgrounds. SGS provides artistic development support and resources (such as fundraising consultancy and industry connections) to aspiring artists from a range of regions including London. SGS use excellent industry connections and have a proven track record in supporting emerging musicians who have gone on to become commercially successful and long-term artists in their own right. They also provide bespoke training, guidance and an excellent network for deprived young people in communities, enabling them to have long-term fulfilling careers in the industry. The funding from Sony Music pays for apprenticeships for young people not in education or work to access training and career development in the music industry, in partnership with Sony Music’s 4th Floor Creative division, to increase diversity in creative and digital roles."

9. Irene Taylor Trust

"The Irene Taylor Trust seek to inspire positive change in the lives of prisoners, former prisoners and young people in challenging circumstances through creating and performing original music. The funding from Sony Music is supporting a year of activity for former prisoners, including three-week-long projects. Participants are supported to create and perform original music, building their self-confidence, their aspirations for the future and transferable skills such as communication and teamwork, which improve their employment prospects. The activity provides focus at a time when former prisoners are particularly vulnerable and need to avoid situations that may lead them to re-offend."

10. StopWatch

"Since forming in 2010, StopWatch has led a wide-ranging campaign against the disproportionate use of stop and search, the increasing use of exceptional stop and search powers and the weakening of accountability mechanisms. This includes legal and policy analysis, media coverage and commentary, political advocacy, litigation, submissions to national and international organisations and community organising. The funding from Sony Music is funding a therapeutic support programme for children and parents to deal with the impact of the police’s ‘Stop and Search’ policy that overwhelmingly affects young Black men, plus the creation of a practical guide for families with advice and tools."

11. Nubian Jak Community Trust

"Nubian Jak Community Trust is a large diversity plaques and sculpture scheme. Its raison d’ĂȘtre involves the promotion of equality and diversity for public benefit through educational plaques, eliminating discrimination on the grounds of race, raising awareness and promoting activities to foster understanding between people from diverse backgrounds, some of whom have not had historic recognition."

12. Jaguar Foundation

"The Jaguar Foundation is an organisation founded by BBC Radio 1’s Jaguar Bingham. Its mission is to make electronic music a more equal place for the next generation of creatives and emerging artists. Through forward-thinking initiatives, the Jaguar Foundation aims to create an inclusive platform that inspires people from minority backgrounds to gain greater opportunities and feel represented throughout the music industry."

13. Flock Together

"Flock Together is an organisation which began life as a birdwatching collective, but quickly grew as an organisation working to address the underrepresentation of people of colour in the outdoors. The Sony Music funding is supporting an academy programme, seeking to inspire the next generation of young birders and future conservationists to look up and around. The Academy will provide school-age children with a safe place to discover birding, nature and ecology. Led by CEO Ollie Olanipekun, founder of Superimpose/ Futurimpose, Flock Together’s six pillars help guide all activity that they undertake as a collective – from getting people to appreciate the benefits of nature, building a community and challenging existing preconceptions, to professional mental health support, pathways into the creative industries and mapping the ecological benefits of the environments they explore."
